Semi-Pro (movie)

Will Ferrell’s newest comedy is, in a word, terrible.  After 15 minutes of throw-back Ferrell and hilarious imagery, the movie takes a drastic turn for the worse and never bounces back.  It’s not that audiences are getting sick of Ferrell or this type of humor, it’s that this isn’t Ferrell and this isn’t humor.  Jackie Moon, at his core, isn’t funny.  He is part Buddy the Elf and part Ron Burgundy, except he doesn’t have the naive charm of Buddy or the arrogant likeability of Burgundy.  When Jackie Moon does something stupid, it’s annoying, not funny.

Furthermore, the movie plays more like a dramedy than a comeda.  There are around 4 or 5 scenes that drone on for tens of minutes trying to establish an emotional arc between Harrelson and Tierney, and they are hard to watch.

There are some serious laughs to be had thanks to the genius of people like Matt Walsh, Andrew Daly, Will Arnett, and even Tim Meadows, but they don’t lift this atrocity nearly high enough to warrant a 5 dollar Blockbuster rental charge.  Have your friends go watch it and quote the 6 or 7 funny lines - you’ll save money and time and still get all the laughs.
