“Migrate” ( song )

B +

Mariah Carey has proven once again that she is the greatest singer/songwriter of this or any generation.  After successfully writing a song that was too smart and funny for most of america, her second attempt off the upcoming E=MC2 LP is more of what popular music thrives on.  It’s catchy, it has a ridiculous verse from T-Pain, and she belts all the great high notes at the end.  I’ll be damned if this song doesn’t hit at least 3 on the Billboard 100, and depending on what else she’s up against, will most likely be her 19th number 1 hit.

“Touch My Body”, a single released early this month, has been receiving mixed reviews yet solid airplay and billboard gains, because of it’s crazy lyrics such as “I will hunt you down” and “better not catch this on Youtube”.  What people may not realize is that Mariah didn’t first write this song and then had it become a joke, rather she wrote it as a joke from the get go.  Many people take Mariah for a dumb, pampered diva, even though she has written 16 of her 17 number one hits.  She wanted to start this CD in a playful way, and even suggested the theme of the video, which featured her seducing Jack McBrayer in his fantasies.  Amazing.  There’s a scene of them walking a unicorn together.

Regardless, “Migrate” takes a sharp turn away from playfulness and speaks of migrating from various locations to the next hot spot for a night of fun.  T-Pain even drops the line “So don’t wait for me to buy drinks, Or you gon’ dehydrate - It’s time to migrate”.  Just the kind of crap that people will eat up.   Unfortunately, we will need to hear her 18th number 1 single first, which is an unheard ballad off her upcoming album that will obviously be amazing.  But until then, try to find a version of Mariah singing Migrate from SNL last saturday online, its worth finding.
